Suspect Surrenders In Wood Dale Burglary, Police Chase
WOOD DALE, Ill. (CBS) -- A suspect has surrendered after going on the lam for three days, following a burglary and police chase in the western suburbs.
Eugene Sanders, 32, of the 7900 block of South Francisco Avenue, turned himself in around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Wood Dale police. He was wanted in a warrant on conspiracy and residential burglary charges.
Some earlier accounts referred to the suspect as Eugene Saunders.
Rivas said Wood Dale officers surprised the two men as they tried to break into a home on the 400 block of George Street in Wood Dale, shortly before midnight Monday. Within minutes, officers had Nakia Tyler, 36, also of Chicago, in custody.
Tyler, of the 7200 block of South Union Avenue, was charged with conspiracy and residential burglary, according to police.
Sanders fled in a green Chevrolet Malibu and was involved in a crash at North Avenue and Addison Road in Villa Park, then abandoned his vehicle in Lombard when it overturned at St. Charles Road near Route 53, police said.
But Rivas said Saunders allegedly sped off. Sanders' Chevy Malibu struck another car in Villa Park as a police officer watched at North Avenue and Addison Road, but kept going onto St. Charles Road in Lombard.
"He overturned his vehicle and fled the area on foot before other officers could get to the scene," Rivas said.
When the fugitive got into downtown Lombard, police say he was almost caught.
"He wound up crashing his car, and fleeing into a residential area – a heavily wounded residential area, said Lombard Police Chief Ray Byrne.
Initially, police told neighbors in Lombard to stay inside, but they later concluded that Sanders had left the area and was not a threat.
