Suspect Hospitalized After Shootout With Police

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The suspect in a shootout with police late Thursday on the Far South Side was taken to an area hospital in serious-to-critical condition following the incident.

The exchange of gunfire occurred about 11:30 p.m. near 105th Street and Calhoun Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Officers involved in the incident were responding to a shots-fired call, one of several on that same block Thursday night, police said. Details surrounding the incident weren't immediately known, but the suspect pointed a weapon at officers during the confrontation, police said.

Residents say they are tired of living with the violence.

"It's sad," said Nancy Diaz. "There is no respect for human life."

Shots were fired at and by police during the incident, Alfaro said.

The suspect was not shot but was transported to an area hospital for an unspecified injury following the incident, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Emergency crews took one person to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious-to-critical condition, Fire Media Affairs Spokesman Rich Rosado said.

Investigators with the Independent Police Review Authority confirmed no one was shot in the incident, according to an IPRA spokeswoman, who did not have further details early Friday.

No officers were hurt, Alfaro said.

A police squad car responding to the shooting was involved in an accident at 103rd Street and Stony Island Avenue. Nobody was injured when the squad car collided with another vehicle, police said.

In other shootings, two men were injured Thursday night in separate shootings in the Englewood and Lawndale neighborhoods.

Around 11 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the buttocks in the 6300 block of South Paulina Street, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

At 11:23 p.m., a 24-year-old man was sitting on a porch in the 3500 block of West 12th Place when an offender approached and started shooting, police said. The victim was shot in the arm and back and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in "stable" condition."
