Suspect Held In Fatal Hit-And-Run On West Side

Updated 07/10/11 - 5:10 p.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) -- The motorist who fatally struck a man waiting for a bus early Sunday in the Garfield Park neighborhood has turned himself in to police.

Police said a man -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as 49-year-old David Bunch -- was struck by a vehicle traveling east in the 3400 block of West Jackson Boulevard about 3:25 a.m., police said. The vehicle then fled the scene.

The medical examiner's office said Bunch was waiting for a CTA bus when the car struck him, but police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said the black vehicle hit him near an alley.

Bunch, of an unidentified home address, was pronounced dead at 3:50 a.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the medical examiner's office.

The driver of the vehicle turned himself into police about 4:45 a.m., a Harrison District police lieutenant said.

Police are interviewing the driver, but no charges have been filed as of 3:45 p.m., Baety said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, according to the medical examiner's office.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
