Suspect Charged In Fatal Shooting Of Subway Restaurant Employee
CHICAGO (CBS) – A suspect has been charged in the February murder of a Subway restaurant employee who was fatally shot during an armed robbery.
Chicago police said Anthony White, 36, was arrested Thursday after an informant recently told gang-intelligence officers he was the armed robber responsible for the death of Lynn Ward, 54.
White, whom police characterized as a career criminal, was charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery on Friday. He was expected in court Saturday.
Ward was working Feb. 9 at the Subway shop at 1129 N. Western Ave. when White came in, pulled a gun and demanded cash from Ward, police said.
"When she became frightened and backed away, he became aggressive and fired the shot at her," Chicago Police Cmdr Anthony Riccio told reporters at a Friday news conference.
Ward was hit in the neck and later died of her injuries. After she was hit, White demanded another worker open the cash register, and he fled with cash from the restaurant.
Riccio said the case had gone cold, even after police circulated a surveillance photo of the suspect. Police got a break in the case in mid-September when gang investigators talked with a third party who told them he could identify the gunman.
