Suspect Charged In Chatham Robbery, Shooting
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A South Side man has been charged with shooting another man during a robbery early Wednesday in the Chatham neighborhood.
Melvin L. Martin, 29, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery with a firearm, both felonies, according to a release from Chicago Police.
Martin allegedly approached a 27-year-old man sitting in a vehicle in the 800 block of East 82nd Street a few minutes after 1 a.m. Wednesday and announced a robbery, police said. He took the man's wallet before firing multiple times and running away.
Officers patrolling nearby heard several gunshots and saw Martin running away from the scene, police said. The officers took him into custody and a handgun was recovered.
The 27-year-old victim was taken with a gunshot wound to the lower back and a graze wound to the head to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was listed in "stable" condition, Alfaro said.
Police said he identified Martin as the man who robbed and shot him.
Martin, of the 7100 block of South Whipple Avenue, is expected to appear in bond court Thursday.
