Subzero Temps Gone -- For Now -- But Snow, High Winds Return
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago area has seen the last of subzero temperatures for a few days, but more snow is on the way for the afternoon and evening, and high winds will keep wind chills feeling frigid the rest of the morning.
The temperature reached a low of 6 below zero around 2 a.m. Friday at O'Hare International Airport, but was back above zero by 7 a.m., when the mercury reached 2 degrees. Wind chills dropped as low as 23 below zero, and could remain well below zero for the rest of the morning, as increasing winds blow from 25 to 35 mph, with gusts of up to 45 mph.
A winter weather advisory has been issued for the Chicago area and much of northwest Indiana through 6 a.m. Saturday, as snow moves into the area late Friday afternoon or early Friday evening. Up to 3 inches of snow could fall by Saturday morning.
Because of the high winds, blowing and drifting snow likely will worsen Friday afternoon and evening, and could leave many roads covered in snow, especially in open areas, and visibility could be reduced to zero in some places.
The break from subzero temperatures will only last through the weekend, though, as Monday brings a return to extreme cold -- with a low of about 2 below zero early Monday morning, and then as low as 12 below zero early Tuesday. The high on Monday will struggle to reach zero degrees, while the high on Tuesday might be 2 below.
