Suburbs Take Advantage Of Electricity Deregulation

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- A growing number of suburban communities are trying to take advantage of deregulation in the electricity industry, which they say can save thousands on utility bills.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Mike Krauser reports, Glenwood Mayor Kerry Durkin calls the choice "a no-brainer."

The SouthtownStar reports both communities are asking voters for permission to buy power in bulk, to save on electric rates.

With the consent from residents, they get power from the Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Cooperative, but only if the price is better than ComEd is offering.

Individual residents have the option of opting out and staying with ComEd if they so desire.
