Suburban School District Votes To Cut Over 300 Teachers
CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. (CBS/WBBM) -- A suburban school district is getting ready to lay off hundreds of teachers at the end of term.
According to a spokeswoman, teachers at Community School District 300 in Carpentersville will receive letters Thursday indicating that they no longer have a contract.
The district, which includes more than two dozen schools in several Kane and McHenry county suburbs, hopes to bring back all of the teachers. But the district needs to negotiate salaries with the union to make that happen, the spokeswoman said.
Students have said they might walk out on Thursday.
As WBBM Newsradio 780's Regine Schlesinger reports, on Wednesday, over 1,000 people packed a gym – many of them booing the cost-cutting plans that led to the teacher layoffs.

It was at the end of the heated meeting that the board narrowly voted to approve 363 layoffs to close a $5 million budget hole.
School board members are hoping to avert some of the job cuts, and are hoping the unions will work with the school board to find other ways of closing the gap.
