Suburban Cops Warn Of Utility Worker Scam
AURORA, Ill. (STMW) - Police are reminding west suburban Aurora residents of the importance of checking the identification of anyone who may come to their homes purporting to be utility workers or others offering home repair services.
The reminder comes on the heels of an incident that occurred Tuesday morning in the 2600 block of Carriage Way on the city's far East Side.
At about 11:00 a.m., a man knocked on the door of a home in that block and told the 34-year-old resident that he was from the cable company and had to enter the woman's basement to check the service.
The woman immediately became suspicious because she did not have cable service and asked to see the man's work identification. When the man refused to show her ID, the woman shut the door and the man disappeared.
Police Lt. Rick Robertson said genuine utility workers will be wearing some type of company uniform and all will carry proper identification.
