Suburban Church To Churn Out Real Snow For 'Frozen' Under The Stars
CHICAGO (CBS) -- If you spot snow in the northwest suburbs tonight, don't worry, it's not an untimely return of the Polar Vortex, it's just a special viewing party for the Disney movie Frozen.
WBBM Newsradio's Dave Berner reports, every year, Meadows Christian Fellowship church in Rolling Meadows hosts "Cinema Under The Stars," an annual community movie in the church parking lot.
"This year, because of the huge popularity of the movie Frozen, we decided to show this movie and get 8 tons of snow for people to play in," said ministry coordinator Laura Celmer.
The snow will start blowing into the church parking lot at 5 p.m., and keep going until the movie starts at 8:45 p.m.
"I'm encouraging people to maybe wear their snow boots, and definitely bring gloves, but wear your shorts and your T-shirt," Celmer said.
Dieter Strum, owner of Wisconsin-based Snow Making by Sturm, and known for his special effects work in movies like Fargo and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, will use 8 tons of ice to create the snow.
"We do special effects and snow-making is our specialty," he said.
The snow-making truck will blow 800 pounds of snow per minute, creating mini-blizzards every 15 minutes until the movie starts.
"Yes, it's absolutely real snow," he said.
After the snow, the movie will be shown on a big outdoor screen. Fans will get lyrics sheets for all the songs in the movie so they can sing along if they want.
