Suburban Bank Says Fraudulent Charges Originating In Taxicabs
(CBS) – First American Bank, based in the northwest suburbs, is warning customers not to use their debit cards in taxicabs in Chicago.
CBS 2's Chris Martinez reports.
The warning calls cabs out by name, including Checker and Yellow.
Their on-board credit card consoles is where the fraud begins. So says First American, which has traced hundreds of devious charges to customer cards just after they're swiped in cabs.
The bank first learned of the scheme early this month, tracking nearly 500 attempted hacks, topping $62,000. Since then, "We have continuously monitored activity on our customers' cards," according to a bank statement.
"We will continue to close and reissue cards that have been exposed."
