Suburb: School District Hasn't Paid Its Share For Crossing Guards
Spat Between Village, School District Over Crossing Guard Funding
(CBS) -- A spat between the village of Buffalo Grove and School District 21 may leave schoolchildren without crossing guards when classes start Monday morning.
The village of Buffalo Grove says it decided two years ago that the village would pay about two-thirds of the cost of crossing guards and that District 21 Schools would pay one-third.
But Buffalo Grove Village Manager Dane Bragg says the school district hasn't paid a dime. Now, there will be more crossing guards for the intersections in District 21, he tells WBBM's Steve Miller.
"With the district being two years in arrears, which equates to about $24,000, we notified them in June that they would need to become current in order for us to continue to provide the service."
He adds: "They notified us in writing that they wanted to continue in the program, but they did not want to pay for it."
Bragg says the crossing guard cost-sharing is working with two other school districts.
He says District 21 never actually signed off on the cost-sharing.
Late Thursday, District 21 Board President Bill Harrison told WBBM: "I am heartened that the village manager is interested in working toward a solution."
The school board was meeting Thursday night.
