The study showed that Illinois students are on a level playing field with other kids, but CPS students specifically are far behind when compared to students in other large urban school districts.
For eighth-graders, the study showed they scored 27 points lower in science than their peers nationwide. Fourth-graders lagged 24 points back.
In terms of analyzing scientific concepts and critical thinking skills, only 44 percent of eighth graders scored a partial grade, as compared to 50 percent of students in other large cities.
One expert points the finger at CPS elementary and middle school science teachers, who may not have a background in science.
