Students Back In School After MRSA Scare
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Students are back in class Wednesday morning, after a health scare at a Chicago Public school.
Someone at the Guggenheim Elementary School, at 7141 S. Morgan St. in the Englewood neighborhood, is believed to have contracted MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), a serious bacterial infection that can be fatal if not treated.
CPS officials said they cleaned the school building thoroughly.
Meanwhile, letters were sent out to parents to alert them of the possible infection, but no classes were being canceled and all school schedules were continuing as normal, according to CPS spokeswoman Monique Bond.
In the letter, officials advised parents to make sure their kids wash their hands or use hand sanitizer.
Doctors said students do not need to see a doctor unless they have a persistent abscess, rash or boil.
CPS officials also said earlier that parents should not be afraid to send their children to school Wednesday.
