Chicago Police Investigate Report Of Rape In High School Classroom
(CBS) – Chicago police are investigating a report that a student was sexually assaulted in a classroom at Southwest Side high school.
The incident happened at 3 p.m. Friday at Currie Metro High School, 4959 S. Archer. A student told police she was raped by a man who was 17 or 18; he fled after the attack.
A family member took the victim to Little Company of Mary Hospital, police said.
Veronica Robles was among parents surprised to learn about the alleged attack on the Internet and not from school officials.
"You assume that every child is safe. You never know," she tells CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot.
School officials say students are not in any immediate danger.
"An allegation of inappropriate sexual activity involving two students took place Friday afternoon. The parents of the students have been notified, and Chicago police are investigating the incident," officials said in a prepared statement Monday.
Community activist Andrew Holmes hopes school officials will release surveillance images of the suspect so that the media can distribute them to the public.
An investigation continues.
