Streets Shut Down For DNC Rally Featuring Obama
CHICAGO (STMW) - Streets in the South Side's Hyde Park and Woodlawn neighborhoods will be closed Saturday afternoon as a crowd is expected to swell at the Democratic National Committee's Organizing for America project rally featuring President Barack Obama.
Street closures will take place between 58th and 61st streets from Cottage Grove to Stony Island avenues, a release from the city's Office of Emergency Management & Communication said.
The street closures will not take effect until the crowd size begins to grow and are expected to reopen after crowds subside, the release said.
The rally area will be open to the public beginning at 4:30p.m. and attendees will be screened prior to entering the rally area.
Residents are encouraged to take public transportation to the event and the CTA is planning to add extra buses and trains to accommodate those going to the rally.
In addition, the 59th Street Metra station will be closed from 2 p.m. on Saturday until the first train on Sunday, Oct. 31. Riders can board inbound and outbound trains from 55th, 56th and 57th Street stations located at 55th to 57th at Lake Park Avenue, the release said.
