Street vendors rally in Little Village for more police protection after string of robberies
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Street vendors from across Chicago gathered in Little Village Saturday, calling on city leaders to come up with a dedicated plan to keep all vendors safe on Chicago's streets.
We've been following this story since last month when one vendor was shot during a string of robberies in December. That vendor lived, but the thieves got away with $400.
Ever since that shooting, the community has been looking out for each other but wants more protection from Chicago police.
The rally comes after a meeting earlier in the week where members of the Little Village Community Council talked with Chicago Police and were promised more officers during overnight hours.
In the 48 hours after those stepped up patrols, there were no robberies of street vendors in Little Village. Now the hope is that the success in Little Village can be recreated in other nearby communities.
