Street Sweeper Driver Blamed For Deadly Orland Park Crash

ORLAND PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- Orland Park police are faulting the driver of a street sweeper for a deadly crash over the weekend.

As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, it was around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when the 24-year-old driver of a Toyota Camry was making a left turn from LaGrange Road onto 171st Street.

Her car collided with the street sweeper, and was propelled into a pickup truck.

Inside the car were the young woman's mother, Wafieh Deis, 49; her father, Nazmi Deis, 62; and her younger sister, Samah Deis, 15, all of Tinley Park. All three were killed.

Their funerals were held Tuesday.

The driver was injured, but survived.

Now, Orland Park police are blaming the driver of the street sweeper, who has been ticketed for running a red light.

"To my knowledge there was no (left-turn) arrow. (The 24-year-old driver) was waiting to make that left-hand turn. The light had changed. Traffic coming northbound, it was their responsibility to stop. Based on witness interviews, he clearly disobeyed that red light and went through it," Keating said.

Orland Park police are not releasing the driver's name pending further investigation of the case, Cmdr. John Keating told the SouthtownStar on Tuesday.
