Stranger To Pay Fine For Men Caught Filling Ice Rink With Hydrant

TINLEY PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- A stranger has come to the rescue for the two Tinley Park men who got in trouble for using a fire hydrant to fill their backyard ice rink.

As WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, heart surgeon Dr. Bryan Foy of Burr Ridge told the Chicago Tribune he read about the plight of Tony Nelin and Timmy Ryan, both 20, who got a ticket from Tinley Park police last weekend for tapping into their fire hydrant for their hockey rink.

Foy has now agreed to pay the fines and $130 water bill for the two young men, the Tribune reported. He will find out the final cost when Nelin and Ryan are in court on Jan. 26.

Ryan, of Oak Lawn, and Nelin, of Tinley Park, built the 90-foot by 40-foot hockey rink in the back of a friend's house. It comes complete with a penalty box.

The men told CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli they just wanted to skate, so they borrowed a 2-inch hose from Nelin's uncle, a firefighter, and it up to a fire hydrant on the property of Tinley Park High School.

When a custodian spotted it, police were called, and the ticket was issued.

Now, the rink has melted due to the unseasonably warm weather, but Nelin and Ryan plan to fill it again.

"We'll get it done, I know we'll get it done," Nelin said.

But this time, they plan to fill the ice rink with a garden hose.
