Stormy Afternoon Ahead, With Chances For Flash Flooding
CHICAGO (CBS) -- As heat and humidity build through the day on Monday, so will the chances for showers and thunderstorms.
While most of the Chicago area was dry to start the day, storms and showers were rolling through the North Side of the city, the northern suburbs, and southern Wisconsin early Monday. Temperatures should hit a high of about 82 degrees by mid afternoon.
Those storms will push off to the north and east through the morning, but more another system likely will develop in the western suburbs Monday afternoon, bringing more showers and storms, which could bring heavy rain through the evening.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for most of northeastern Illinois, and parts of northwest Indiana, until 4 a.m. Tuesday, as the ground is already saturated from all the precipitation over the past several days.
"Due to recent bouts of rainfall over the past week to ten days, the ground is nearly saturated in many places and additional rain could very well lead to immediate runoff and rapid flooding, as well as quick stream and creek rises. Flooding of some roadways may occur, and the timing of the heaviest rainfall may impact the late afternoon and early evening commute," the service said in its flash flood watch statement.
The storm system should move into northwest Indiana by around 9 p.m., and clear out of the Chicago area by around 11 p.m., and the area should dry out a bit overnight.
Tuesday should be a calmer, and relatively dry day, though a bit cooler, with a high of only about 76.
While daytime temperatures will stay in the mid to upper 70s through the end of the week, showers and thunderstorms are a possibility virtually every day, though the chances are better on Thursday and Saturday than the rest of the week.
