Stolen Car Found Submerged In Fox River
ELGIN, Ill. (STMW) -- A car found submerged in the Fox River Tuesday morning turned out to have no one inside it, and the vehicle had been stolen the night before from an Elgin resident.
The car was found submerged up to its rooftop in water off Duncan Avenue, just south of the I-90 bridge in Elgin.
At 7:40 a.m., divers from both the Elgin Fire Department and South Elgin Fire Protection District were on the scene, preparing to enter the water, while a tow truck stood by.
Elgin Police Commander Ana Lalley said the car was seen already in the water by a passerby. She said emergency workers on the scene suspect there is no one inside but can't be sure until divers reach it.
An abandoned car was found submerged at almost the same spot in the river several years ago.
