State Police Stepping Up Patrols For Super Bowl
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Don't be shocked to find more police cruisers watching you this Super Bowl Sunday. Illinois State Police will be stepping-up patrols on the roads, all a part of a statewide focus on D.U.I. enforcement.
Troopers will be looking for what's been dubbed as the "FATAL 4": those driving under the influence, speeders, distracted drivers, and those not wearing seat belts.
State police will be patrolling all around the Chicago area, just as they have on other major holidays.
This Super Bowl weekend crackdown, comes on the heels of last year's wrong-way crash on I-80 near Kedzie in Hazel Crest that killed four people.
It happened in the early morning hours, the day after the 2012 Super Bowl. Troopers say alcohol was a factor in this crash.
State Police say this year, their goal is to remind Super Bowl fans to celebrate responsibly with a designated driver. Troopers say alcohol is a leading factor in fatal traffic crashes, especially during celebratory weekends.
In 2011, 278 people were killed in Illinois because of drunk drivers.
Last year, State Police wrote a thousand citations from their crackdown Super Bowl weekend.
