State Police Speed Cameras To Be Watching I-57 Work Zone
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Illinois State Troopers will be using a mobile speed camera van on I-57 on Tuesday to enforce work zone speed limits.
WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports an Illinois State Police van, equipped with a radar and cameras, will be in the work zone along I-57 in Kankakee County.
Drivers are given a chance to slow down before they're fined for speeding in a work zone – which carries a fine of at least $375.
The van also has a display that shows a car's speed as it approaches, before the vehicle gets to the point where the cameras start snapping. Once the camera takes a photo of a speeding car, it's too late. That vehicle's owner will be getting a ticket in the mail, complete with photos of the car, the license plate, and the driver.
State police said there are about 8,000 crashes in work zones every year.
