Off-Duty Chicago Cop Killed In Dan Ryan Crash
(CBS) -- An off-duty Chicago Police officer was killed in a crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway Sunday afternoon, according to state police.
State police say the off-duty cop was riding a motorcycle in the southbound lanes of the Dan Ryan near 69th Street when the officer was hit by a red 2007 Pontiac at about 2:15 p.m. The driver of the Pontiac remained on the scene.
Police say the driver of the car cut off the police officer by making an abrupt lane change to avoid missing the exit at 71st Street. That driver was cited for an improper lane change and no valid insurance. The officer was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.
The officer has been identified as probationary police officer Tito M. Rodriguez
"We are truly saddened by the loss of Officer Tito Rodriguez who perished in today's tragic accident," said Chicago Police Superintendent McCarthy in a statement. "On behalf of the entire Chicago Police Department, our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Whenever we lose one of our own, it has an effect on each of us, and we will be sure to honor Officer Rodriguez's memory and spirit appropriately."
