Two Shot During State Police Traffic Stop On South Side
(CBS) -- Two people were shot Thursday evening in an incident involving the Illinois State Police, officials said.
The shooting occurred near Vincennes and 77th around 8:30 p.m.
Illinois State Police troopers were conducting a traffic stop when they were flagged down by the driver of a taxi cab, who said his passengers refused to pay their fare.
Police said one of the passengers did not listen to the troopers' commands, and pulled a gun out of his pocket.
According to police, troopers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the gun. When he did not, one trooper fired his weapon.
"As we were coming this way, then we saw the police at the window of the cab, and they were trying to pull somebody out the back seat. Then we heard the shots, three shots," witness Denise Sanders said.
One of the men in the back seat of the taxi was shot twice in the lower torso. The second was shot in the toe.
A 23-hear-old man was released from the hospital and was in police custody Friday morning. A 25-year-old man was being treated at Stroger Hospital.
The troopers were not injured.
Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.
It was the second state police-involved shooting within the last week. Last weekend, state police fired on suspects in the South Loop, injuring a teen who was later charged.
