State Moves To Close Nursing Home After Scandals

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Illinois state officials are moving to close the Alden Village North nursing home in the Rogers Park neighborhood, on accusations of a pattern of neglect and death there.
Officials with the Illinois Department of Public Health announced Friday that they have begun proceedings to revoke the license for the nursing home, at 7464 N. Sheridan Rd.
The department determined in particular since changing ownership in 2008, the nursing home has committed eight serious violations, including failing to provide proper care, according to a news release.
The violations were "Type A," which are the most serious category, the release said. Type A violations can result in serious risk of harm or death, according to the release.
The facility cares for about 90 children and adults with severe developmental disabilities.
While the Health Department's focus is on violations since 2008, problems at the nursing home go back well before that.
Among the most infamous cases was that of Jeremiah Clark, 9. The Chicago Tribune reported Jeremiah had been in the home, then called Mosaic Living Center, since he was 4 years old for profound cognitive disabilities.
He died on May 21, 2008, of shock, infection and bowel obstruction, and while teachers at his school had found fluids leaking from the hole where his feeding tube was attached, the nursing home didn't call a doctor for two days, the Tribune reported.
But the operator of the nursing home tells the Tribune that since current operator Floyd Schlossberg acquired the facility in 2008, "numerous and significant improvements" have been made.
