State Lawmakers Want Changes For Redistricting
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) - Illinois lawmakers are preparing to change the ground rules for re-drawing their districts.
Some lawmakers want to end what the Chicago Tribune characterizes as a "secretive, backroom process" and instead hold public hearings around the state.
A second proposal is designed to preserve certain voting blocs, such as the Chinese ethnic community in Chinatown, so they are not split into districts in which their voices are not heard, the Tribune reported.
Districts will be redrawn after Census results next spring.
Currently, Democrats have complete control of how redistricting is conducted, and Republicans are worried that the Congressional districts in which many of their candidates won in November will be eliminated, the Tribune reported.
