Stalled Freight Train Moved, After Snarling Traffic And Metra Trains In Glen Ellyn
Updated 11/06/13 - 8:55 a.m.
GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (STMW) -- A disabled freight train that cut off traffic at several busy intersection crossing gates Wednesday morning in west suburban Glen Ellyn has been moved.
The train was disabled and stopped near the Glen Ellyn Depot Metra Station since about 4:30 a.m., preventing traffic from crossing the tracks at three crossing gates, including Prospect Avenue, Main Street and Park Boulevard, according to Glen Ellyn Deputy Police Chief Bill Holmer.
Union Pacific was able to move the train and open up crossings at 8:30 a.m., according to Holmer. A crew had attempted to repair the train shortly before 6 a.m., but was unsuccessful.
Metra trains operated throughout the morning, only with small delays from an earlier signal problem, according to a Metra spokesman.
However, the disabled train prevented Metra riders from parking their cars in the lot on the other side of the tracks, police said. Glen Ellyn police officers were assigned to monitor the crossings.
It was not immediately clear what mechanical failure disabled the train, Holmer said.
