Speeding Motorcyclist Struck Car; Rider Flew 80 Feet
HOBART, Ind. -- Long after Gary police stopped pursuing two speeding motorcycles Monday morning, one of the drivers lost control and crashed into a passenger car on Indiana 51.
Matthew Mosley, 23, flew more than 80 feet after his bike hit a car turning into a driveway north of Ainsworth Road about noon.
Mosley suffered critical injuries and was being treated at St. Mary Medical Center here, police said.
The incident began when Cpl. Jeff Tatum saw two motorcycles speeding near 41st Avenue and Broadway.
The bikes ran several stoplights as they drove south at more than 70 mph, Cpl. Agnes Roberts said.
When the bikes turned east on 61st Avenue, Tatum discontinued his pursuit.
Minutes later, Hobart police located the bikes as they turned south on Indiana 51 from 61st Avenue, but were unable to catch up to them because of their speed.
A Hobart woman driving south was turning left into her driveway when Mosley, who was speeding south in the northbound lane, struck her car and flew through the air.
His companion, Steven Gardner, 19, of Chicago, was apprehended a short time later by Hobart police. Gardner was walking in the area, but police found his motorcycle hidden nearby.
Tatum arrested Gardner, who faces charges of reckless driving and other traffic offenses.
One of the bikes was reported stolen from Chicago. Another had a stolen plate, police said.
Hobart police spokesman Lt. Jack Grennes was unavailable to provide additional information.
