Sox Feast on Cubs Pitching
It hasn't been often that the Sox have put up 10 runs in a game, although the Cubs pitching staff seemed to be the panacea for their hitting woes. AJ Pierzynski had the best day of his season going 4-for-5 with a homer in the seventh inning off Jeff Stevens. It was AJ's first four-hit game of the year and was just a triple short of the cycle for the day. Pierzynski also seems to really like hitting at Wrigley--he's got a .329 career average at the Friendly Confines.
On to the third-base side of the field, Randy Wells lost his fifth straight decision and gave up 5 runs on 10 hits in just five innings. His problems in the first inning continue, as well. He gave up two in the first on Friday and, on the season, has given up 15 of his 42 runs in the first inning. One bright note for the Cubs was that Alfonso Soriano hit his 300th career homer off Jake Peavy in the second inning. Peavy earned his fifth win of the year in the 10-5 Sox victory while Randy Wells slipped to 3-5.
For the Sox, trade rumors continue to surround AJ Pierzynski. AJ reaches 10-and-5 status at 12:01 Monday morning and will then have the ability to veto any trade. When asked after the game about all the trade talk Pierzynski said, "I mean I'd be lying if I said it didn't [get to me], of course. I mean, not only that but all the trade talk and, you know, this and that. I'm a human being and every person goes through it. You know, I've said all along that I just want to get to this Sunday so it will all go away."
While many talking heads out there have suggested that the Sox should, or even need, to trade Pierzynski, he wants to stay. "Obviously I love playing here," Pierzynski said. "I love playing for the White Sox and I'd love to stay here. And to hear all this stuff about this and about that, you know, it gets to you. Like I said, I'm happy when Sunday gets here, it'll be over with and you guys can ask somebody else about something and leave me alone."
