Southwest Suburban Nurse Charged With Murder, Claims Self-Defense
JUSTICE, Ill. (CBS) -- A southwest suburban nurse stands charged with killing a man during an argument, but her attorney says she acted in self-defense.
Janine Brown, 33, is charged with first-degree murder. The southwest suburban nurse is being held on $800,000 bond in the slaying of Anthony Kingyon, 47.
Brown is accused of shooting Kingyon during an argument near their homes on Friday. The Sun-Times Media Wire reports Kingyon was searching for keys in the Oaks at Willow Hills complex, in the 8600 block of South 88th Avenue, when Brown came back and shot him with a .32 caliber handgun.
Neighbors have claimed the woman asked Kingyon for a cigarette, but he didn't have one. Minutes later, she allegedly returned and shot him three times.
Brown's attorney said in court Sunday that she acted in self-defense after Kingyon punched her and broke her glasses. He pointed out bruises on Brown's face, and said Kingston was to blame for them.
Kingyon's brother, David Ellis, told CBS 2's Derrick Blakley that the Hickory Hills police station is right across the street from the apartment complex where Kingyon lived. But the shooting scene is in Justice, and thus, Hickory Hills police did not immediately respond.
Hickory Hills police did respond later, to back up Justice police. On Saturday, Cook County sheriff's investigators were gathering evidence.
