South Suburban Man Convicted Of Slashing Man's Thoat
HAMMOND, Ind.(STMW) A Lake Superior Court jury convicted a south suburban man of attempted murder in a 2011 case in Hammond.
David Jay Harman, 48, also was convicted of aggravated battery and battery in the knife attack on a 77-year-old man on May 31, 2011, in the 7600 block of Oakdale. The verdict came back less than two hours after closing arguments concluded.
Evidence presented by deputy prosecutors Judy Massa and Eric Randall showed J.R. Jenkins was assaulted in his home by Harman, who punched and kicked Jenkins, broke a wooden chair over his head, then slashed his throat almost ear-to-ear. Jenkins underwent two surgeries, rehabilitation and was hospitalized for about two months, prosecutors said. Harman had been dating Jenkins' third ex-wife at the time.
Judge Clarence Murray scheduled a Feb. 28 sentencing hearing. Harman faces 20 to 50 years.
