South Shore Fire Leaves 10 Homeless
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Ten people, including three kids, were left homeless Wednesday after a fire at two townhouses in the South Shore neighborhood.
The fire started shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday on the second floor of a townhouse at 7241 S. Stony Island Ave., a fire department spokesman said. It spread to a neighboring townhouse at 7139 S. Stony Island Ave.
No one was injured, but seven adults and three children were left homeless.
The fire was extinguished by 1:21 p.m.
The two townhouses sustained heavy damage and were uninhabitable, Fire Media spokesman Joe Roccasalva said. It is unclear if there were smoke detectors in the home.
The city's Department of Human Services provided assistance and the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago provided vouchers for hotel accommodations, clothing and food.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
