Son Killed, Mother Wounded In Shooting At Harvey Gas Station
(STMW) -- A 17-year-old boy was killed and his mother was critically wounded in a shooting Saturday afternoon inside a south suburban Harvey gas station.
About 3:45 p.m., officers responding to a call of a shooting in a gas station near Wood Street and Sibley Boulevard found the teenager unresponsive and the woman injured, Harvey police spokesman Sean Howard said.
The teen, identified as 17-year-old Juwan Benson, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The woman, whose exact age was not known, was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Benson lived in the 100 block of West Sibley Boulevard, less than two blocks from the shooting, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Witnesses at the scene told police Benson got into an argument with another male at the entrance of the gas station and, moments later, the shooter opened fire from the doorway, authorities said.
Howard said preliminary reports indicate the mother and son knew the shooter.
"This was not a random act on the gas station," he said. "We think these individuals may have been targeted by the shooter."
Authorities are reviewing surveillance video of the shooting as Harvey police investigate.
