Someone You Should Know: Naperville Responds For Our Veterans
(CBS) – It's called Naperville Responds for Our Veterans -- a group of volunteers who go around the metropolitan area helping to make veterans' homes more accessible.
They're all someone you should know, CBS 2's Harry Porterfield reports.
Brian Dilger is a building contractor who is donating his services for a needy veteran.
Eugene Galka is a Hines VA Medical Center outpatient, living in a medical foster home. Soon, the new bathroom under construction will accommodate him, and his wheel chair -- all donated by Naperville Responds.
Jack Persin, president of the organization, says he looks where the need is greatest.
"We just want to help veterans and improve their way of living," he says.
Zach Arnold, now a volunteer with the organization, knows how important the work is. He lost a leg in Iraq.
"When I was wounded in 2007 ... I bought a home and the bathroom was not handicap accessible," he says. Naperville Responds took care of that, he adds.
In five years, the organization has worked on more than 100 homes. For more information, click here.
