Someone You Should Know: 11-Year-Old Trampolinist
He's just 11 years old, but in the last year he's learned an incredible skill.
And Drake Hunt is someone you should know, CBS 2's Harry Porterfield says.
Kids will be kids, and the Dyer, Ind. resident was a typical pre-teen with nothing more on his mind than being himself.
But in a short time, he would transition from ordinary to extra ordinary becoming a national trampoline champion.
"It has been very good. I really love it," Drake says.
After less than a year at Dyer's Midwest Training Center, the youngster won the National Trampoline Championship along with second place in tumbling. That was preceded by a regional and Indiana state championship.
I'm still amazed at what he does," his mother, Heather, said. "When he first started here at Midwest Training Center, it was just to put him in recreational gym."
His coach, a trampoline champion from Russia named Oleg Fedosov, is impressed with Drake's ability, which he calls "phenomenal."
Drake trains 3 ½ hours every day, Monday through Saturday. On weekdays, that is followed an evening's worth of home work as a sixth-grader.
"I want to get better and better every day," he said.
Trampoline competition is new to the Olympics. It was first incorporated in the Olypmic Games held in Sidney, Australia, 10 years ago. So Drake has a shot at it.
Since he started with the trampoline, his grades have improved along with a clear vision of his future.
His dream is to be an Olympic champion and a teacher.
