Some People You Should Know: Father And Son Wood-Carving Team
CHICAGO (CBS) -- They are a father and son who share an amazing passion. Both are wood carvers and both are champions at creating incredibly beautiful works of art.
CBS 2's Harry Porterfield says Bob Guge and his son, Josh, are both someone you should know.
The father and son have a way of capturing wild life that does no harm to either fish or fowl. Their trophies are all works of art, carved from wood.
Without formal art training, Bob was inspired by his father.
"He started out by making his own hunting decoys, and one day he decided to do some more decorative types of birds," Bob Guge says. "Growing up with that and seeing it, one day I just tried it and never stopped."
Bob has won the Best In The World wood carving championships five times for the birds he has sculpted from wood. Working alongside of son, Josh, who lives in west suburban Gilberts, it's easy to see how one generation can inspire another.
Josh specializes in fish, and he, too, is a champion, with awards just like his father.
"I really love salt water fish," he says. "I love the ocean -- that's my real passion."
Along with creating figures of birds and fish, Bob and Josh spend a share of their time teaching others how it's done in their Guge Institute of Wildlife Art.
Bob is often away, traveling as far away as Japan with his sculptures. Both he and Josh make time for students.
"I like when somebody's face lights up because they finally got something for the first time," he said. "They might want to go and share it with somebody else."
