Some North Side Residents Not Happy To Be Displaced By CTA Overhaul
(CBS) – CTA officials say at least 16 buildings will need to be torn down to make way for elevated bypass tracks at the busy "Clark Junction" that serves the Red, Brown and Purple Lines.
WBBM's Steve Miller has reaction from one of the areas that would be most affected.
The 3200 block of North Wilton is in the CTA's demolition bulls-eye.
On the corner of Wilton and School -- in the middle of that bullseye -- is a 14-unit condo building that's seven years old.
Steve Johnson has lived there for almost seven years, and they just recently finished some improvements.
"They redid the sidewalk, planted some trees. And just next month we were planning to install some landscaping and a source of water. And we're not really sure where that's at anymore," he says.
Residents Could Be Displaced By CTA Project
The CTA's plans have caught Johnson and others off guard.
"OK, so for two years (the CTA) said there are no plans, that it's something that's concept only," Johnson says. "Well, today we get a knock on the door from CTA representatives notifying the neighbors that within two years we'll probably be relocated and have to move."
Johnson says he will fight "as hard as anybody's seen anything fought."
