Soldier Field Chief Would Do Some Things Differently With Stadium Evacuation
(CBS) -- The storm system bearing down on Chicago this past weekend led to the first time Soldier Field was evacuated during an NFL game.
And while everyone got out safely, there were some anxious moments for fans in the upper deck. CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine talks with the man who made the decision.
"You look at a day like yesterday and it's a challenge I hope I never have again in my life. But it's something you have to be ready for," Soldier Field General Manager Tim LeFevour says.
LeFevour, a respected 30-year veteran, admits there are some things he'd do differently next time.
While some fans got out quickly, others in the upper deck -- where a third of all attendees were sitting -- had a tougher time.
Jill Orze of Algonquin, who was at the game, said ushers were standing along the wall, not moving the crowd.
"We are going to reevaluate the ushers and talk to them about their job and what they need to do to give people direction," LeFevour says.
Another problem, Orze says, is food-concession areas were still open. Customer lines blocked progress.
"We know in the future if we have to ask people [in the upper level] to seek shelter, we'll close the concession stands for awhile, get people to safety first, and then reopen," LeFevour says.
