Soccer Fans Invade Grant Park For USA-Ghana World Cup Game
(CBS) -- Soccer fans filled Grant Park with red, white and blue as the U.S. took on Ghana in their opening game of the World Cup.
U.S. Soccer organized the viewing part at Arvey Field in Grant Park near Columbus and Roosevelt. The game was being shown on a 19'-by-33' high-definition screen.
CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports crowds came early decked in U.S. soccer gear to stake out their viewing sports
"I love soccer," said Elvia Gramillo. "It doesn't get better than this."
Across town in a small restaurant, some Ghanians prepared their own party.
"If Ghana score, it's gonna be loud here because here Ghana is home," said Smart Frimpong.
In the end, America prevailed against Ghana 2-1.
A viewing party for the U.S.-Portugal game will also be held in the same spot on June 22. The viewing party for the U.S.-Germany game will be located at the Petrillo Music Shell in Grant Park on June 26. There will also be a fan fest area for each of the viewing parties.
