Snow Total For 2013-14 Season Reaches 80 Inches

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The first day of spring on Thursday officially brought just less than an inch of snow, pushing Chicago a bit closer to the second-snowiest season ever.

The 0.7 of an inch at O'Hare International Airport lifted the official total to 80 inches for the season, which is measured from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

Here are the top five seasons:

1. 1978-1979 89.7 IN.
2. 1977-1978 82.3 IN.
3. 2013-2014 80.0 IN.
4. 1969-1970 77.0 IN.
5. 1966-1967 68.4 IN.

There has never been a measurable snow in June in Chicago.

However, given the cold temperature trend, it is quite possible that the area will see another 2.5 inches of snow, which would rank No. 2 all time. A total of 9.8 inches would set the record.

The record snowfall for the month of March is 23.1 inches (1926); for April it is 13.6 inches (1938) and May 2.2 inches (1940).

So far this March, O'Hare has measured about 9.5 inches of snow.

This winter also ranks No. 3 all time for "meteorological winter" snow--measured from December through February.
