Snow Falling At Airports, Some Suburbs
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The first snowflakes of the season are falling Tuesday afternoon at O'Hare Airport and flurries were also falling at Midway in many suburbs early Tuesday afternoon.
Though snow is falling, the ground is too warm for it to accumulate in most areas.
Snow falling at O'Hare means that today will go down as the first day of a trace of snow for the season.
Snow was also reported at Midway, and in Aurora, Naperville and LaPorte County, Ind.
The first hard freeze spread across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana overnight, with the exception of downtown Chicago.
According to the National Weather Service statistics, the earliest that a trace of snow has fallen in the Chicago area is Sept. 25. That happened in 1942 and 1948. The average date for the first trace is Oct. 30.
The rest of the week is going to be dry and chilly, with highs in the mid to upper 40s.
