Smoky Smell Halts CTA Red Line
CHICAGO (STMW) -- The smell of smoke halted a CTA Red Line train on the Near North Side and temporarily forced some trains to operate on the elevated tracks Wednesday morning.
The smell of smoke was reported at the Chicago Avenue Red Line stop station about 9:50 a.m., CTA spokeswoman Wanda Taylor said.
The train was stopped and passengers were able to leave but fire crews were en route to investigate, Taylor said.
Red Line subway trains were rerouted to the elevated tracks between Fullerton and Cermak-Chinatown, according to a CTA service alert. Normal service was restored by 10:15 a.m.
Dispatch reports indicate the smell was reported in the mezzanine and no fire was found.
