Smoky Fire Starts At Union Station
CHICAGO (STMW) - A smoky fire started above the train tracks at Union Station Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters responded about 4:15 p.m. to a report of light smoke coming from a beam above one of the tracks in Union Station at 220 S. Canal St., Fire Media Affairs spokesman Kevin MacGregor said.
The fire department was notified after a Metra train departed from the station, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.
Firefighters sprayed water on the blaze and extinguished the fire quickly, MacGregor said. Nobody was injured.
Metra said the station was not evacuated and the fire did not affect train service.
Amtrak owns Union station and spokesman Cliff Cole said authorities are preliminarily investigating if sparking by track three caused the fire, but noted the official cause is still under investigation.
