Smith Vague Regarding QB Situation Against Packers
(CBS) Lovie Smith was somewhat vague Monday regarding his starting quarterback, saying Caleb Hanie is his starter, but adding that there would be an evaluation with more information available Wednesday.
"Right now, Caleb Hanie is our starting quarterback," Smith said. "He played yesterday. We felt like we needed a boost. We needed to change the course a little bit yesterday, but we do that with all players. None of those decisions have been made. With any of our positions, we evaluate the video, which we're doing right now, and come Wednesday for you guys who are out here Wednesday, you'll have an idea then."
Hanie was benched in the fourth quarter Sunday after throwing two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the Bears 38-14 loss to Seahawks. Veteran quarterback Josh McCown, who the Bears signed after Jay Cutler was injured, came into the game in relief. If Hanie does not start against the Packers, it appears McCown will play instead of rookie Nathan Enderle, who the team might want to get some experience.
"This isnt' a tryout period either," Smith said. "We're trying to win a football game. The best guy who is able to do that -- after talking to our coaching staff -- will be on the football field. No more than that."
