Small Fire Shuts Down Roosevelt Red Line Stop, Reroutes Trains
UPDATED 03/13/12 10:57 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A small trash fire in the Red Line subway prompted first responders to evacuate the Roosevelt Road station, and shut off power to the trains.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, the small fire broke out on the CTA Red Line sometime before 6:30 a.m. near the Roosevelt stop. The fire was extinguished quickly, but smoke poured into the subway station.
Fire crews responded to the scene, and evacuated the Roosevelt station platform, sending everyone back up to street level. They also shut off power to the third rail at the station.
As a result, Red Line trains were rerouted to the elevated tracks between the Fullerton and Cermak-Chinatown stops, CBS 2's Derrick Young reported.
Two people on the train suffered minor smoke inhalation and were taken Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Chicago Transit Authority spokeswoman Molly Sullivan told the Sun-Times Media Wire.
Normal Red Line service resumed soon after the scene was clear.
