Sleep Expert: Time Change This Weekend Will Require Adjustment

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- Daylight Saving Time is almost over, and a sleep expert wants to ensure a good transition this weekend.

As WBBM Newsradio's Alex Degman reports, people generally respond better when the clocks "fall back," as an hour of sleep is gained instead of lost.

Dr. Jerry Reedy, the medical director of the St. John's Hospital Sleep Center in Springfield, says it actually takes the body a while to adjust each time the clock changes, but it's not so bad.

"For each hour time change, it typically takes the body about an hour to adjust," he said. "So for Daylight Saving, usually within 24 hours, 48 hours, people are kind of back on track."

Reedy says getting adequate sleep is one of the most important parts of good health, yet many adults and some children are quick to cut back on sleep to fit more into their day.

Standard Time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday.
