Sleep Can Wait For Cubs Fans After All-Night World Series Party
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Ask the Cubs what really makes the game special, and they'll tell you it's all about the fans. Plenty of diehard Cubs loyalists are returning the favor Thursday, after the team's historic World Series victory Wednesday was sealed with an 8-7 win against the Indians in Game 7.
Thousands of fans swarmed Wrigley Field during Game 7, and hundreds were still partying outside the stadium as late as 3 a.m.
"I was up celebrating all night," Stacy Meiman said.
Meiman was among the dozens who stayed outside the Friendly Confines until dawn to see the Cubs get back home from Cleveland. For them, sacrificing sleep was not even a question, because Cubs fans have waited 39,400 days to call their team World Series champions.
The title that had been out of reach for so long is now shining on the Wrigley Field marquee and emblazoned on the front page of newspapers, and the trophy itself is back on Chicago turf.
If season-ticket holder Jeff Gorski could say something to the players, it would simply be "thank you."
"Thank you for the best summer that could possibly have happened, because this was an amazing run," he said.
The feat the Cubs completed overwhelmed some fans.
"Crying and screaming. I mean, everyone in Chicago is exhausted," one woman said.
Lots of fans stopped by Wrigley on Thursday to take a picture with the message on the marquee, some doubly documenting history by bringing a copy of the newspaper.
