Slain Former CHA Cop To Be Remembered
CHICAGO (CBS) - Family and friends will gather Friday night to remember a former Chicago Housing Authority police officer who was gunned down outside his home, along with a Chicago officer.
A wake will be held Friday for Stephen Peters, 44, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rayner & Sons Funeral Home, 318 E. 71st St. A funeral will follow at 10 a.m. Saturday at the same location.
Peters was shot and killed Nov. 26, along with Chicago Police Officer Michael Flisk. Flisk was recovering fingerprints from a garage behind the 8100 block of South Burnham Avenue after Peterson's Mustang was burglarized.
Timothy Herring Jr., 19, is being held without bond in the murders.
Prosecutors said the parolee approached Flisk and Peters in the garage to tell them he knew who had committed the burglary, but Peters told Herring it didn't matter, because they had already recovered fingerprints from the scene. Herring, who lives across the alley, allegedly walked away, turned around and shot both men, prosecutors said.
A funeral for Flisk was held Wednesday afternoon. Mayor Richard M. Daley and police Supt. Jody Weis were both in attendance. He was the sixth Chicago Police officer to fall victim to violence this year.
