Skull Found On Dead-End Street In Gary
GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- There was a disturbing discovery in a remote area of Gary, Ind., Friday morning, when a utility worker found a human skull lying on a dead-end street.
Chopper 2 HD found police at the scene early Friday morning, and a blue tarp marking the spot.
The worker from the American Water Co. first found the skull around 4 p.m. Thursday in the weedy area in the Midtown section of Gary, just north of the Borman Expressway.
Police responded to the scene and found scraps of clothing, as well as other ones, nearby at the southwest corner of 27th Avenue and Maryland Street in Gary, the Post-Tribune reported.
The neighborhood is largely a wasteland, with only a few houses among numerous vacant lots. Trash, chunks of concrete and even an abandoned row boat are strewn about the area.
The Lake County Coroner's Office asked Stephen Nawrocki, a forensic anthropologist from the University of Indianapolis, to come to the scene Saturday and help with identifying and removing any skeletal parts. Investigators believe there is at least one body at the scene.
The area has been taped off and Gary police will keep the site secure until the coroner can complete the investigation.
